 Moose On The Loose

Anchorage - capital city of Alaska is the wildest city on earth thanks to its dramatic wildlife.  Alongside 260,000 people live up to 1000 moose, 200 black bears and grizzlies, along with large numbers of beavers, ravens, and eagles.  Managing this urban menagerie is all in a day's work for Fish and Wildlife rangers Rick and Jesse.  Moose with taste for pumpkin terrorize kids during Halloween, and endlessly lose their calves in spring, whilst the summer salmon run lures dozens of grizzlies into the more upmarket neighbourhoods, whilst black bears become addicted to rubbish. For Rick there's more at stake than day to day animal management - he believes that people and large dangerous animals can live in one city and through his groundbreaking project he's determined to prove it.

Honourable Mention for Ecological Presentation; Honourable Mention for Fitting Theme - Demonstrating Human-Wildlife Conflict

Snow Leopard - Beyond The Myth

Northern Pakistan is the setting for this heart warming tale of a man's quest to find and film the snow leopard.  In 2004 a team from the Planet Earth series come to these remote mountains near the Afghan border and filmed the first ever intimate images of a wild snow leopard.  For Nisar Milik the Pakistani journalist who led the expedition, this shoot marked a turning point in his life; the images were not enough, he felt compelled to return and really get to know this creature of legend.  Together with cameraman Mark Smith he spends two years documenting the snow leopard's daily life, finally lifting the veil on the most elusive of all cats.

The Edge of Eden- Living with Grizzlies

Featuring Charlie Russell (with CBC and BBC Worldwide).  Filmed and narrated by Jeff Turner, the film recounts the remarkable efforts of Charlie Russell to prove his theory that grizzlies and people can live in harmony.

Filmed in the Kamchatka Peninsula in far Eastern Russia, this is the full length 90 minute presentation.

Charlie will be in attendance at the festival and will be available for a question and answer period following the screening.

  Amba The Russian Tiger

This remarkable film tells the story of "Spirit Amba", the tiger of the North, the Russian Tiger.  Gordon Buchanan travels through the dense forests of Ussuriland hoping for a glimpse of one of the rarest and most elusive animals on the planet. After traveling thousands of miles and meeting some of the most extraordinary people, Gordon finally comes to understand the nature of "Amba".  This beautifully crafted film was shot in the snowy hills of Eastern Russia, north of Vladivostok, a region that was all but unknown to the West until just 100 years ago.  You see the tiger; you understand the tiger but most important of all, you understand Amba.

Finalist 2009; Best Sound Design; Best Use of Music; Merit Award for Editing
